Latitude and Longitude

Today in Social Studies we learned about latitude and longitude lines. Latitude measures north and south of the equator.  Longitude measures east and west of the prime meridian.  When finding the location of a specific place you find latitude first and longitude second.  The link below has a great game of finding latitude and longitude.  We played it during school to help reinforce how to find latitude and longitude.  Have the kids go to the site and practice finding Hannah.

Properties of Matter

We have started learning about properties of matter in Science.  Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  All matter has properties.  A property is something that you can observe with your senses.  Some properties of matter are color, shape, and size.  Mass and how something feels are properties of matter.  The students had to identify the properties of these matters.

Harriet Tubman

During the month of February the 2nd and 3rd graders spent time studying the Underground Railroad for Black History Month.  We learned about a slave named Walter and what his life was like living on a plantation and then his journey to become free.  Another person that we studied about was Harriet Tubman.  The students worked hard to learn their lines to do a readers theater about Harriet Tubman.  I am very proud of the fantastic job the students did in learning their lines and getting into their characters.  We put on the play for the whole school last Tuesday and then on Wednesday parents and grandparents were invited to come and watch the play.  It was great to see so many parents and grandparents come and watch.
