National Prayer Week

National Prayer Week
March 11-17, 2012
Last week to help celebrate National Prayer Week,  the 2nd and 3rd graders joined the kindergarten and 1st grade class and made crosses and wrote short notes to deliver to homes in the neighborhood of our school.  We wanted to let people know that we are praying for them.  We also enjoyed a picnic lunch to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Leap Day

Since Leap Day only comes around every four years we celebrated by making a frog craft.  We used green paper, a CD, google eyes, and pom-poms.  The students traced a circle the size of the CD and also four legs out of green papers.  They glued the circle and legs onto the CD.  We hot glued the eyes to the pom-poms and then glued the pom-poms to the green circle.  To finish, the frog students used a black marker to make the nose on their frog.  Everyone also enjoyed frog cupcakes.  Thanks goes out to Mrs. Wedige for making the cupcakes and Mrs. Dostal for helping decorate them.

March 2 was Read Across American Day, this is the day to celebrate Dr. Seuss.  We found Dr. Seuss hats  to celebrate the day.

Big Dipper

To wrap up our chapter in Science about patterns in the sky the students made an example of the Big Dipper.  Materials used were straws, tin foil, model magic, ruler, and scissors. The students had to cut the straws different lengths using millimeters with their rulers.  After cutting the straws the different lengths they wrapped a ball of tin foil around the end of each straw.   Finally they used a small ball of model magic to make the straws stand on the paper.  They realized that if they stood on their chairs they could see the Big Dipper easier when looking at it from above.

Learning Snow Much

We finished our chapter in Science about the patterns in the sky. To wrap up our chapter we made an example of the Big Dipper.  We will begin studying about the planets next.
In English the 3rd grade has been learning about adverbs, capitalization, and contractions.  The 2nd grade has been learning about adjectives and adverbs.  Learning about these parts of grammar will help the students to become better writers as we work on adding more details when writing.
Both classes keep busy reading their weekly stories in Reading and learning new concepts that goes with the stories.  Math finds the second grade continuing to work on subtraction facts while the third grade has started to learning about division facts and multiplying by three.  Remember to practice the facts at home.  We review facts by playing some games on from the delicious website.  Encourage your child to go there and practice them.  http://www.delicious.com/stjoeschool  You can click on missliewer tab or math tab to practice the facts.
