Flat Stanley visits Arizona

Flat Stanley visited Mrs. Hacker’s daughter Megan in Phoenix Arizona. He came back with sixty-two interesting facts about Arizona.  Some interesting facts we learned:

1.       Arizona became the 48th state and last of the contiguous states on February 14, 1912.

2.       The “Five C’s” of Arizona’s economy are: Cattle, Copper, Citrus, Cotton, and Climate.

3.       Arizona grows enough cotton each year to make more than one pair of jeans for every person in the United States.

4.       The only place in the country where mail is delivered by mule is the village of Supai, located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

5.       A saguaro cactus can store up to nine tons of water.
We thought it was very neat that Stanley was able to see a saguaro cactus since we have studied about them in science.

Be sure to stop in at school and read the rest of the facts about Arizona.  Thank you Megan for being a host to Flat Stanley!

Vintage Valentines

On February 7th, we attended a program that was held at the Atkinson Public Library.  Nancy Klammer from around Johnstown, NE brought her Valentines.  The first Valentine began in 269AD.  She has been collecting them for many years.  Some she has bought at stores or even garage sales. Some of them have been given to her as gifts.  It was neat to see how detailed her Valentines were.  She encouraged the students to start their own collection of something now.

January Believers and Achievers

For the January Believers and Achievers I choose a student who has ‘Handsome Handwriting’.  She got a comment from another teacher about how nice her handwriting is so she was awarded for this.  Keep up the ‘Handsome Handwriting’!  Congratulations!

School Spirit

Our final day for Catholic Schools Week was school spirit day. Students were encouraged to wear a St. Joseph’s shirt. In the morning the whole school celebrated mass at Good Samaritan Center with the residents. Afterwards the students read books to the residents. What a fun way to share part of the morning with the residents.

Upon returning back to school the students and I were seated at our table to enjoy our elegant meal.  The table was set with fancy dishes.  Our waitress did an excellent job of serving us.  She poured everyone water and sparkling white grape juice.  Our meal started off with lettuce salad.  Our main course was roast beef, carrots, potatoes, and a dinner roll.  Our desert was strawberry short cake.  This was a very fun meal to spend together as a class and everyone enjoyed it.

In the afternoon we sang some fun worship with Danny from O’Neill St. Mary’s.  After this everyone enjoyed ice cream sundaes before going home for the day.

To wrap Catholic Schools Week we celebrated mass on Sunday with many of our students participating at mass.  A special video was shown that focused on a few things that showed what we do at St. Joseph’s School through faith, academics, and service to our community.

Hats off to Jesus!

Thursday during Catholic Schools Week was Hats off to Jesus.  Students all wore a hat during the day.  In the afternoon we hosted a game show of, Are You Smarter than a St. Joe Student?  We invited four adults from the community to be our contestants.  Every student had a chance to compete and did an excellent job of competing!
Waiting for the contest to begin.

‘Souper’ Serve Others Day

On Wednesday during Catholic Schools Week we all wore workout clothes so we could get up and move.  To help ‘pay it forward’ students were asked to bring a can of soup that will be delivered to the local food pantry.  To start the day off parents were invited to attend mass with their children.  After mass we all enjoyed donuts with dad and muffins with mom.  The teachers served soup to the students for lunch.  After lunch we all did some dancing in the hallway to get moving.  We had the hallway filled with dancing feet for a little while which was really fun!

Celebrity Day

Tuesday of Catholic Schools Week we had the ‘red carpet’ rolled out for celebrity day.  We are honored to have our own local celebrity, Jack.  To show our support students were encouraged to wear ‘Team Jack’ shirts.  We were even able to Skyp with Jack in the afternoon.  We were able to ask Jack a few questions that the students had through skyping.
