Flat Stanley visits the Netherlands

Flat Stanley had a long journey across the ocean to the Netherlands otherwise known as Holland to Americans.  We are stilling awaiting Stanley’s arrival back to us by mail but we did receive an e-mail with a letter and pictures of his journey.

Stanley visited in the city of Breda which is in the South of Holland near the Belgian border.  It is an old military town that has converted many of the old buildings into more modern functioning businesses.  Holland is famous for shipping, architecture, French fries (Verse Friet), Oliebollen (kind of round doughnuts), bicycles that people prefer over cars, Beer production and local alcoholic beverages like Jenever ( a type of old fashioned Gin. One thing that the students enjoyed looking about was and Sinterklaas and Black Pete.  In America we know Sinterklaas as Santa Claus and Black Pete is known as an elf.

Be sure to stop in at school and to read the rest of the letter about Flat Stanley's journey to the  Netherlands and also check out the many more pictures.

 Historical sites in Breda.

Verse Friets means fresh fries -topped with mayo.  People eat mayonnaise and peanut sauce on their fries instead of ketchup.

Most all Dutch travel by old bicycles and just drop them around the shopping streets as they walk and shop.
